Proton v5

SAP GUI

SAP GUI automations use SAP GUI Scripting, in a Python project (the template project comes with the SAP session ready). The runner's machine needs Windows, SAP GUI installed, and scripting enabled on both the SAP client and the SAP server.

Install SAP GUI

  1. Ask your company's IT team for the SAP GUI installer and install it with the default options, including the scripting component.
  2. Open SAP GUI and add the connections for the environments (server, instance number, and system id), with the details the SAP team provides.

SAP GUI is only available for Windows.

Enable scripting on the client

  1. Open the SAP GUI options.
  2. Under Accessibility & Scripting > Scripting, check Enable scripting.
  3. Uncheck the notifications (notify when a script attaches to SAP GUI and when it opens a connection): otherwise, every run stops at a confirmation window.

Enable scripting on the server

The sapgui/user_scripting parameter must be TRUE on the SAP server. The Basis team does this, in transaction RZ11:

  1. Enter sapgui/user_scripting and click Display.
  2. If it's FALSE, click Change Value, switch it to TRUE, and save.

Also check:

  • sapgui/user_scripting_disable_recording: FALSE;
  • sapgui/user_scripting_force_notification: FALSE.

Windows session

SAP GUI Scripting talks to the SAP GUI windows open in the user's session. So:

  • run Proton Runner with the same Windows user that uses SAP GUI;
  • leave the session open and unlocked, without a screen lock;
  • the SAP user and password come from Proton, as variables of the run's environment or encrypted parameters, never from the code. See Run environment.
