Datasets
A dataset is a version of the automation: the steps in order and the values of each parameter. An automation can have several datasets, one for each set of test data (an individual customer and a business customer, an order paid upfront and one paid in installments).
Datasets open from the automation card, in Automations > Automations. Each dataset has a version (v1, v2...),
which Proton assigns when it is created.
Two views
The screen has two views, and Proton remembers the last one you used:
- Cards: one card per dataset, with the version, the description, the default environment, the tags and the last run. The search looks in the description, the version, the tags and the environment, and the chips filter by last run (never executed, up to 1 month, 1 month or more, 6 months to 1 year, 1 year or more).
- List: a grid, like a spreadsheet, with one row per dataset and one column for each parameter of each step. This is the view for comparing and changing the values of many datasets at once.
Clicking a card (or double-clicking a row in the list) opens the dataset so you can build it.
Create a dataset
Add creates a blank dataset, with the description, the dataset tags and the default environment. The dataset starts with no steps, and Proton opens the builder so you can add the components.
To create a dataset from another one, with the same steps and values, use Duplicate. For many datasets, use the spreadsheet import.
Actions for each dataset
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Edit | The description, the dataset tags and the default environment. |
| Duplicate | Creates a copy in the same automation, with the next version: the steps, the values (encrypted ones stay encrypted), the lists, the variables, the tags, the environment and the expected result of each step. It does not carry over the run history or the links to Jira and Xray. |
| Transfer | Moves the dataset to another automation, with everything that belongs to it, including the run history. The version does not change. The inherited tags become those of the target automation. |
| Dataset Variable | The dataset variables. See Parameters. |
| Run/Results | The dataset runs, with the status, the duration and the report of each one. |
| Delete | Removes the dataset, along with its steps, values, variables, runs and its presence in automation groups. |
In bulk
Check the datasets (in the cards or in the list) to:
- Set environment: the default environment of all the checked datasets, or none. See Environments.
- Add to a group (in the list): to an existing automation group, in the chosen open cycle, or to a new group.
- Send to Xray (or Zephyr): creates a Test for each dataset that does not have one yet. Only when the integration is set up. See Xray and Zephyr.
- Delete.
Edit in the list
In the List view, the cells work like a spreadsheet:
- Type, or double-click, to edit a fixed value or a list. Up to 512 characters per cell.
- Right-click to choose another type of value: General parameter, Dataset variable or Component output from an earlier step. The same menu turns encryption on and off.
- Copy cells from Excel and paste them with Ctrl+V starting at the selected cell. Delete clears, Ctrl+Z undoes.
- With several rows checked, the value you choose or paste applies to all of them.
- Outputs appear with Show outputs, and Only what varies hides the parameters that have the same value in every dataset.
Changes stay highlighted until you save. Review and save shows, for each dataset, the current value and the new one, and saves everything at once: if any cell has an error, nothing is saved until you fix it. Encrypted values appear masked.
Export spreadsheet downloads the fixed values and lists of all the automation's datasets, in the same format that the import reads back.
